Primary Purpose

To interpret for deaf and hard of hearing students in pre-k through 12th grade, to assist the deaf education teacher in academic development of those students and to assist in the preparation and organization of classroom activities. Actively engage in actions that contribute to the overall mission and strategic plan of Clear Creek ISD.

 

Qualifications

 

Education/Certification/Licensure

High school diploma or GED

Educational Aide III Certification

48 college hours or passing score on Paraprofessional Exam

Associates degree or higher related to interpreting or a related field

OR Passing score on Test of English Proficiency given by the Texas Division of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services

OR Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score or 3.0 or higher

OR Out of State Interpreting Certification

 

Special Knowledge/Skills

Ability to work well with children

Knowledge of Deaf Culture

Fluent in American Sign Language or other English sign language system

 

Experience

2 years of experience interpreting or working with the Deaf Community

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Interpret/facilitate communication for students in classes, assemblies, meetings, and during lunch and other non-academic times.
  2. Attempt the Receptive/Expressive Interpreter Certification Test at least once a year. Provide the Director of GBCDHH results within 30 days of receipt of testing results.
  3. Become and remain well-versed in course material in order to demonstrate competency in the in-class support process (provide in class support as specified in the child’s IEP).
  4. Be informed, monitor, and report to the deaf education case manager or cooperating teacher (or lead facilitator) when concerns arise about the student’s individual needs or modifications and/or modifications as approved by the ARD committee.
  5. Assist with implementation of the student’s IEP including modifications, accommodations, and instructional techniques.
  6. Provide on-going direct support to student through-out the school day as indicated by the IEP
  7. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function.
  8. Demonstrate flexibility when role shifts take place.
  9. Engage in personal professional development that supports successful performance on the Interpreter Certification test including vocabulary development in ASL and English, structured interpreting practice, mentoring programs though DHHS, Communication Skills Workshop, Deaf Community events, and other opportunities.

  21. Work cooperatively with co-workers and supervisors to ensure that the goals of the school/department are met.
  22. Maintain a positive and professional tone in all communication (i.e. email, written, and verbal).
  23. Perform other duties and accept other responsibilities as assigned.
