Primary Purpose

Plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive program of guidance, including counseling services to school assigned, consistent with district counseling and guidance guidelines; provide a proactive, developmental guidance program for all students to maximize personal growth and development.

 

Qualifications

Education/Certification

Master’s degree and guidance and counseling

Valid Texas counseling certificate

 

Special Knowledge/Skills

Effective communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development

Excellent organizational skills

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Ability to manage budget and personnel

 

Experience

Minimum of 3 years successful teaching experience

High school counseling experience

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Counseling

  1. Serve as a regular counselor for all foreign exchange students, with the exception of Clear View and Clear Horizons.

Supervision

  1. Supervise counseling team members including counseling support staff.

  2. Supervise all campus counseling and guidance activities and communications.

  3. Participate on the screening committee of new team members in the counseling department and provide information about the campus counseling procedure.

  4. Supervise Campus Registrar.

Coordination

  1. Lead the team to cooperatively plan campus guidance activities, utilizing the strengths of each member in a fair distribution of responsibilities.

  2. Serve as liaison between community groups and school to support student/community opportunities.

  3. Serve as counseling services coordinator for campus crisis management program.

  4. Compile counseling and guidance research and public relations information for the Office of Public Information and campus administrator.

  5. Lead the team to cooperatively establish a system for communication to students, staff, and community through PTA newsletters, student newsletters, guidance handbooks, and materials and other means as appropriate.

  6. Coordinate visits from college admissions counselors, military recruiters, foreign exchange program representatives, and other outside agencies.

  7. Coordinate college and career information programs.

  8. Team with other district lead counselors and the Director of Student Personnel Services.

  9. Work with administrators to develop a system for counseling students with failing grades and implementing plans for success.

  10. Coordinate annual rotating “district guideline programs,” (i.e. College Night, Financial Aid).

  11. Facilitate the campus scholarship committee.

  12. Lead team members to develop a system for distributing scholarship information.

  13. Work with administration to coordinate the registration process and forms for high school registration.

  14. Coordinate registration process with feeder intermediate schools.

  15. Coordinate Dual Credit registration/program.

  16. Lead team members to plan and implement college related testing (i.e. SAT, PSAT, AP).

  17. Coordinate National Merit Scholarship program.

  18. Coordinate and present classroom guidance session.

Consultation

  1. Serve as a resource person for students, parents, teachers, counselors, and community groups.

  2. Provide individual college consultation as needed.

  3. Maintain college acceptance information.

  4. Consult on the evaluation of foreign transcripts, non-accredited schools, and home school transcripts.

Program Management

  1. Select and secure guidance materials for counselors and counseling center.

  2. Manage guidance department budget.

  3. Assist with preparation of school profile yearly.

  4. Provide leadership and meet regularly with campus counseling team in order to implement an effective campus counseling program.

  5. Oversee career computer lab program and college center.

  6. Oversee campus programs such as Awards Night, Superintendent’s Scholars, and DAP Scholars.

Summer Responsibilities

  1. Enroll new students.

  2. Handle phone calls, appointments with parents, and students about academic status.

  3. Oversee Credit by Exam.

  4. Oversee Correspondence Finals.

  5. Implement Dual Credit questions and completion of forms.

  6. Organize and file current year’s counselor paperwork.

  7. Be responsible for registration for summer school.

  8. Respond to questions about college.

  9. Complete communications with College Board and ACT.

  10. Communicate with foreign exchange organizations on placement of students for next school year.
