Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Provide students with hearing impairments with appropriate learning experiences designed to them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth; enable them to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Deaf Education – Master’s Degree preferred

  2. Texas certification in teaching the hearing impaired

  3. One to five years classroom teaching experience

  4. Ability to use sign language, knowledge of Deaf culture and proficiency in total communication

  5. Ability to work well with a variety of adults and children

  6. Ability to be flexible and coordinate scheduling of services

  7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate

  8. Effective communication and interpersonal skills

  9. Knowledge and demonstrated competency in the subject(s) assigned

  10. General knowledge of curriculum and instruction

  11. Ability to instruct students and manage behavior

  12. Openness to change and innovation to meet the needs of all students          

           

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Instructional strategies to promote student growth

  1. Guide the learning of students in accordance with the district’s philosophy of education toward the achievement of curriculum goals.

  2. Develop lesson plans and implement a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students assigned, incorporating needed modifications based on abilities and learning styles.

  3. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative guidelines.

  4. Conduct ongoing assessments of student learning and use results to plan and implement instruction.

  5. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).

  6. Work cooperatively with the campus and district instructional supervisors, leaders, and department heads to improve instruction.

  7. Offer accelerated instruction to each student who meets any of the state "at risk" criteria in order for the student to perform satisfactorily on the state assessment.

  8. Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to campus and district requirements.

  9. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned; sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.

  10. Use available technologies as appropriate teaching and learning tools.

  11. Integrate the instruction of technology into subject area teaching.

  12. Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s) and volunteers.

  13. Manage and utilize data effectively for systemic process and program analysis.

    • Account for the accuracy and verification of all student program data and reports.

    • Implement data-driven decision making for improvement efforts based on best practices.

  14. Manage and utilize policy effectively for maintaining systemic processes and practices.

    • Account for the verification of the correct policy regarding all decisions and correspondence.

    • Implement effective policy-driven decision making.

 

Communication

  1. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

  2. Maintain a professional and cordial relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

  3. Adhere to local, state, and federal guidelines regarding confidentiality.

  4. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with students, parents, and other staff members.

  5. Respond to parent phone calls/messages in a timely manner.

 

Classroom management and organization

  1. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students.

  2. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

  3. Manage student behavior in accordance with the CCISD Student Code of Conduct and handbook.

  4. Provides for care and protection of school property and be held accountable for books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

  5. Maintains accurate student accounting and grading records in compliance with local and state requirements.

  6. Assists in upholding and implementing administrative regulations and board policy.

 

Professional growth and development

  1. Seek and participate in professional development activities to improve instructional effectiveness thereby increasing student achievement.

  2. Participate in district and campus in-service.

  3. Stay abreast of developments in the profession and display openness to change and innovation.

  4. Maintain updated record of all professional development activities.

  5. Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies.

  6. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Mental Demands

Ability to communicate effectively spoken/written English, maintain emotional control while working with students and adults; able to repair communication breakdowns; maintain confidentiality.

 

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

Repetitive hand motions; bending; stooping; walking; moving textbooks, media equipment, desks, and lifting up to forty pounds.
