Primary Purpose
To provide communication access and facilitation to students that are Deaf and Hard of Hearing in a variety of educational settings. To provide academic support and accommodations as approved by the ARD committee. Actively engage in actions that contribute to the overall mission and strategic plan of Clear Creek ISD.
Qualifications
Education/Certification/Licensure
High school diploma or GED
Educational Aide III Certification
48 college hours or passing score on Paraprofessional Exam
Special Knowledge/Skills
Ability to work well with children
Knowledge of Deaf Culture
Fluent in American Sign Language or other English sign language system
Experience
2 years of experience with Deaf children
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Work directly with students to facilitate communication between students who are deaf and hard of hearing and other students and staff.
- Work directly with students who are deaf and hard of hearing in reinforcing and monitoring skills previously introduced by the teacher of the deaf.
- Consistently utilize the students’ designated modes of communication (e.g. listening and spoken language, simultaneous communication, manual communication, or some other preferred mode) and classroom assistive listening technologies.
- Become and remain well-versed in course material in order to demonstrate competency in the in-class support process.
- Become proficient in student’s individual communication methods and strategies.
- Create instructional materials as needed.
- Be informed, monitor, and report to the deaf education case manager or cooperating teacher when concerns arise about the student’s individual needs or modifications and/or modifications as approved by the Individualized Education Program committee (IEP).
- Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function.
- Demonstrate flexibility when role shifts take place.
- Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
- Administer to students with severe physical handicaps by lifting, feeding, cleaning, maintaining hygiene, and any other personal care services that the student requires.
- Responsible for use of safe procedures of physical intervention with acting-out students.
- Implement individualized provisions of positive and negative reinforcement for student behaviors.

- Maintain friendly customer-service-driven interactions with all stakeholders, students, teachers, administrators, and co-workers.
- Work cooperatively with co-workers and supervisors to ensure that the goals of the school/department are met.
- Maintain a positive and professional tone in all communication (i.e. email, written, and verbal).
- Perform other duties and accept other responsibilities as assigned.
