Primary Purpose

 

Teach sign language to parents and young children; work directly with non-certified interpreting staff to prepare for the Basic certification test and assist with the development of their skills; provide on-going classroom observations of staff interpreters and maximize their learning of American Sign Language.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Education/Certification/Licensure

Minimum: Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university

Minimum: BEI or RID Certification

Preferred: BEI Advanced, Master or BEI Level III, IV, V, or RID equivalent

Special Knowledge/Skills

Effective communication and interpersonal skills

Fluent American Sign Language skills, Interpreting and Transliterating

Knowledge of Deaf Culture

Ability to work well with adults and children

Ability to provide training to certified interpreters, or non-certified staff members, and parents

Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain multiple schedules

Knowledge of interpreter role and Code of Ethics

Own or have access to a personal vehicle

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships

Experience

Minimum of 3 years of experience in educational setting providing interpreting services

Preferred: Minimum of 3 professional trainings created and provided for BEI/RID CEU credit

 

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties

 

  1. Collaborate to create and maintain schedules for certified and non-certified paraprofessional staff to meet student needs and IEP plans.
  2. Provide support to RDSPD teaching staff in the development and implementation of effective communication techniques using sign language.
  3. Interpret legal situations involving police and/or CPS.
  4. Verify accuracy in overtime reporting of payroll for all interpreting staff.
  5. Beginning of the school year and throughout the school year, site campus presentation on the roles of deaf and/or hearing-impaired students and interpreters.
  6. Collaborate with campus and program teams to coordinate coverage for staff absences.
  7. Conduct observations of interpreters throughout the school year.
  8. Evaluate interpreter sign language skills and provide director of GBCDHH with feedback.
  9. Provide professional learning for the interpreters throughout the school year.
  10. Provide sign language classes for students on the role of an interpreter.
  11. Assist principals with interpreter issues and by interpreting for deaf professional staff in administrative meetings.
  12. Assist director in gathering documentation both positive and negative, for interpreting staff.
  13. Assist director in coordinating supplemental staff through scheduling contract and part-time staff.
  14. Interpret for ARD meetings, testing of students, counseling, substitute, and additional assignments when available.
  15. Establish a strong network and professional ties to the Deaf community and interpreter organizations for the purpose of recruiting and staff development resources.
  16. Assist director in recruiting and screening interpreter applicants.
  17. Travel between campuses daily, using personal transportation (mileage reimbursed).
  18. Provide sign language classes for staff and parents.

  28. Maintain friendly customer-service-driven interactions with all stakeholders, students, teachers, administrators, and co-workers.
  29. Work cooperatively with co-workers and supervisors to ensure that the goals of the school/department are met.
  30. Maintain a positive and professional tone in all communication (i.e. email, written, and verbal).
  31. Perform other duties and accept other responsibilities as assigned.
